Crop Technician

Optimising crop/plant yields whilst maintaining and improving the surrounding environment.

Overview

Crop Technicians are responsible for optimising crop/plant yields through establishment, management, harvest and post-harvest operations, while maintaining and improving the surrounding environment.

Two routes are available for this apprenticeship standard:

  • Soil Based System - typically found in the agriculture sector, producing cereals, oilseeds and vegetables.
  • Container Based System - typically found in the horticulture sector, producing plants and trees.

Training covers the major areas a Crop Technician will experience, including:

  • Prepare seed bed/growing medium for maximum growth potential.
  • Control of pests, weeds and diseases including safe use, application and storage of chemicals.
  • Carry out harvesting operations including assessment of timing and quality.
  • Soil/Substrate maintenance tasks to ensure efficient and healthy growth of crop/plant.

Apprenticeship level: Level 3

Typical duration: 24 months
