Tree care and woodland maintenance.

Arborist - Level 2

Overview

The broad purpose of the occupation is the care and maintenance of trees for their benefits and values in diverse urban and rural locations, from street trees, city parks and urban woodlands to country estates and private gardens. The work of an Arborist involves diverse activities such as chainsaw work, aerial tree work, pruning, dismantling of trees, and using machinery such as brushwood chippers. 

Training covers the major areas an Arborist will experience, including:

  • Formative pruning to young trees to form good canopy structure.
  • Target pruning to mature trees.
  • Use specialist machinery to manage and process brush wood.
  • Climb and conduct aerial arboricultural operations from a rope and harness to industry best practice standards.
  • Fell and process trees safely.

Apprenticeship details 

Apprenticeship level: Level 2

Typical duration: 18 months

Funding band: £12,000 - Government subsidies and/or Levy Share can cover up to 100% of apprenticeship training costs for SMEs. Visit Cost of hiring an apprentice for more information.

Arboriculturist - Level 4

Overview

Arboriculturists undertake tree inspections and surveys, recording information on tree management databases and to evaluate each tree individually. They supervise contractors undertaking specified tree works and can check for the safety of the site and quality of work. 

Arboriculturists comply with legislation in relation to trees including making sure relevant authorities have approved work to be undertaken. They provide tree related advice - management and law.

Training covers the major areas an Arborist will experience, including:

  • Tree inspection including assessment of health, defects, safety risks, site factors, planning requirements and aesthetics.
  • Advise on implications of arboricultural policy, legislation, regulation.
  • Manage projects including working within budget, systems and processes.
  • Identify soil type, properties, condition and implications for tree health.
  • Identification of tree species, their characteristics and requirements for healthy growth.
